Cowboys & Aliens

Does this wild west sci-fi mash-up, from the director of Iron Man, starring James Bond and Indiana Jones live up to the hype?

Synopsis
A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys and natives are all that stand in their way.

Who's In It
Daniel Craig - Bond in a cowboy hat
Harrison Ford - (Old) Indy without his whip
Olivia Wilde! The hottie from TRON: Legacy
Sam Rockwell! If you haven't seen Moon, you should definitely check it out
Clancy Brown! Kurgan from The Highlander

What I Thought
I'd heard a lot of mixed reviews about this. How could director Jon Favreau screw this up? I'll tell you how, it just doesn't work for some reason. Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible it just doesn't work mixing cowboys and aliens. The flashbacks that Daniel Craig's character experiences (amnesia again?) feel out of place. The alien space ships are cool, and the aliens themselves are decent enough, it just doesn't quite feel right.

If you like westerns (I do) and if you like sci-fi (I do) then check it out, just don't expect to be blown away.

Memorable Quotes
  • "We've got a kid, a dog, why not a woman?"
  • "I don't know much about boats, but I would say that one's upside down."
  • "Don't yank on it, it's not your pecker."

  1. Harsh dude, I enjoyed it, the cinematography is good (as most comic conversions are) Guido

  2. When it started I found myself enjoying it, the western side of it that was. But when the flashbacks started, and the cheap light shining on the ground in the town when they're first attacked, it just lost it's appeal. The cowboys were too "neat" too.

  3. Feels like a flick that was poked, tweaked, reformatted and re-edited at least a dozen times. But there is still some deal of fun to be had here, this just shouldn’t have taken itself so seriously. Good review.

  5. Mixed reviews indeed. But I thoroughly enjoyed it as a western-alien hybrid film.
