These are the best animated movies that I watched in the last year (not necessarily all from 2011) that I would recommend for anyone who has kids, and animation fans. If you've not seen any of these, then you definitely should check them out.
So in no particular order:
Gnomeo & Juliet
Brilliant! One of the better animated movies I've seen recently with plenty of humourous jokes and nods to other movies and fiction. A well known story, with a happier ending obviously, and the Elton John music fits really well. Watch it!
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole
Amazing slow motion aerial battles, stunning vistas with numerous excellent water and fire effects. And a good hearty adventure to boot. I thought this was going to be rubbish but its really great!
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn
Epic action movie which approaches the borders of the uncanny valley. Left me walking out looking forward to the sequel
Cars 2
The first one was sentimental, this one is action packed, has a good spy twist and is visually stunning
Rango
The characters in director Gore Verbinski's movie look amazing and the bat fight sequence is brilliant!
Rio
Keeps a good pace for kids who tend to get bored quickly
The Illusionist (L'illusionniste)
A French animation but with very little speaking, so don't worry too much. Very beautiful animation and poignant story
Mars Needs Moms
I really enjoyed it even though it didn't do very well commercially. Loved Gribble, great character, made me laugh :)
Winnie The Pooh
If you loved Pooh as a kid, you'll love this, it's really funny too.
The Secret of Kells
Beautiful, unique animation style with some great characters from this Irish animated movie
Shrek Forever After
A decent return to form, heaps better than 3
Kung Fu Panda 2
Great animation and amusing but not as good as the first one and felt like it reused ideas from the original
Tangled
Easily the best animation Disney have made in the last 20 years - a must see for guys and girls.
