Red State - Movie Review

Why Kevin Smith should stick to making films with puerile humour.

Synopsis
Set in Middle America, a group of teens receive an online invitation for sex, though they soon encounter fundamentalists with a much more sinister agenda.

Who's In It
John Goodman - The agent sent in to rectify the situation
Kevin Pollak - Not in it for long unfortunately
Stephen Root - Playing a sheriff with a penchant for something other than his wife
The kids are all a bunch of no-namers

What I Thought
I usually like Kevin Smith movies. He's made some great movies in the past, Clerks, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, Dogma, Mallrats, Zack And Miri Make A Porno, hell I could keep going!

Basically, some kids go looking for an easy shag they find via mobile phone ads on their iPhone and get kidnapped by this sick, twisted group of religious zealots.

Have you ever seen that show by documentary film-maker Louis Theroux about the Westboro Baptist Church, the most hated family in America? Well this is a spin of that in the sense these religious nuts take it one step further and start killing people for being homosexual or for solicited fornication.

Boring the crowd
There's a real lull after initial opening with kids getting caught. The so called pastor gives a sermon that goes on for ages, and I mean ages, spewing bullshit and it went on for too long, and hence annoyed me.

The film then steps up the action with the unexpected arrival of the cops during an escape of one of the kids. The situation goes from bad to worse, before being rectified during what seems to be a sign from God.

There are a few unexpected scenes which have their moments. And John Goodman looks really thin in this movie compared to his usual jovial size. There's also some decent, tense camera work during the escape. The poster is however misconceiving, in that the girl pictured never even holds an AK-47 in the film. And that's about it. I just didn't enjoy it.

Memorable Quotes
  • "Even the Nazis think this guy is nucking futs!" (sic)
  • "How much do you think a cross like that costs?"
"Do you mean dollars or common sense?"
  • "And then what happened?"
"I subdued the suspect with a head butt."

Rating
2/5 - It's gritty. It's real. It's twisted. I just couldn't bring myself to like it.

  1. Dude! I really enjoyed this movie, as long as you are ready for the fact it is not in the Askew-nivrse, yes some monologues do drag on but that is a Kevin Smith trait in all his movies... not a 5 but in my mind better than a 2!

  2. I also enjoyed the movie quite a bit, it handles things very differently from most movies. There's no specific protagonist, there's not even really a specific genre you could place it in. Honestly, from reading your review, I can't tell what it is you didn't like about it other than the monologue in the middle, John Goodman looking thin, and the girl in the cover not wielding an AK-47, and two of those don't really have anything to do with the movie.

But of course, going along with what you said, everyone's entitled to their personal opinion.

    1. Hey, yeah, this was a weird one for me, and thanks for your comments. I guess I should have been more forthcoming with valid reasons for why I didn't like this one but I just didn't. Think I prefer Kevin Smith's other films (Jay & Silent Bob) and this just didn't do it for me. I've taken your points on board though and strive to be clearer in future.
