Who Is The Bad Guy In The Avengers Credits? Spoiler Alert

By now you should all know that Loki is the main villain in The Avengers. But who is that bad guy in the end credits of Marvel's Avengers? If you haven't seen the movie, stop reading this now, as spoilers follow.

Loki has an army from another dimension to help him take over the world, the Chitauri, who are from the Marvel Universe, just not the shapeshifting alien race from the comics.

Chitauri
But you're not here to read about them. Who is the bad guy in the end credits of Marvel's Avengers Assemble? Well, the Chitauri are a counterpart to the Skrulls, and upon seeing the guy in the end credits, it's clear he has a furrows in his chin. This got me to talking with friends, could it be Super Skrull?

Super Skrull
Problem is, Super Skrull is from the Marvel universe but it associated with The Fantastic Four, rather than The Avengers. And he's green, the bad guy in the end credits quite clearly had a a purple coloured skin.

I've had a few other suggestions in the comments below, and not all of them are Marvel, like Hell Boy (Dark Horse), Darkseid (DC), Apocalypse and Galactus (both Marvel), but it's none of them.

Which can leave only one villain, who is Thanos. He has the furrowed chin and the right colour skin, and is known to have had run in's with both Iron Man and Thor in the Marvel universe. As you can see, the comic art is a good fit for the face in the end credits.

Pretty sure this is the bad guy. What do you guys think? Comment below.

    10. It's Thanos. Thanatos is the personification of death in Greek mythology, and the line at the end of the movie is, "To challenge the Avengers is to court death" (or something close). Physically a match. Thanos is the villain.

    13. Straight from the Wikipedia page: Thanos makes a brief appearance during the credits in the 2012 film The Avengers.[47] Thanos is portrayed by actor Damion Poitier.[48] He is revealed to have been Loki's benefactor, having provided the Chitauri army utilized by Loki in his attempted invasion of Earth. When advised by his intermediary (known simply as the "Other") that opposing the Avengers would be "to court death," Thanos glances at the camera and flashes an evil grin.

    16. Some good lateral thinking there with the colours and the costume! Still pretty confident it's Thanos however

    17. Actually, for those who know comics, Thanos' first appearance was in IRON-MAN #55, then went on to fight the Avengers, so Thanos IS a Avengers foe. It is not a matter of thinking, but KNOWING, that the next movie villain for A2 will be Thanos (this would also bring about a crossover with the Guardians Of The Galaxy movie).

    2. Kang, it has to be Kang. Purple skinned, green suit, HUGE enemy to the Avengers, and only with the combined might of the Avengers and Stark's electronic genius do they defeat/overcome Kang the Time Traveling Conqueror.

      Delete
    3. I also think it's Kang. The smile when faced with vexing news of the failed invasion says a lot about the arrogant, megalomaniac.. He relishes the challenge of the defiant Avengers & would take great pleasure in breaking them & have them kneel before the all conquering Kang.

      Delete
    4. I agree with Kang. Closer linked to the Avengers story line, but it also could be Thanos

    5. to mess with the avengers is "to court death." Who else has literally courted Death herself besides Thanos?

  3. The Avengers hasn't opened near me yet (I know, I shouldn't be reading, but couldn't help myself!), but I wanted to see if it was going to be worth sitting through the credits (or coming back after a quick trip to the restroom.) It turns out that I'm not familiar enough with the villains to know who Thanos is, but I hope he gets a cool line or something!

    1. It's not right at the end of all the credits, it's about a minute or so after the end. I don't think he says anything, it's more of a grim smile.

      Delete
    2. The "Thanos" scene (I agree and also believe its him, too small for Galactus and I sincerely doubt a cross-party villain like Darkseid) comes up quickly in the credits and is worth a short wait. The second Easter Egg is good for a chuckle, but is a wait of several minutes. That said, I liked it. Go see this movie.

The "Skrull" says "... to challenge them, is to COURT DEATH" (Then Thanos turns and smiles) which was what Thanos was indeed doing in the Infinity Gauntlet story.

    3. In Greek mythology, Thanatos (Greek: Θάνατος (Thánatos), "Death,"[1] from θνῄσκω - thnēskō, "to die, be dying"[2]) was the daemon personification of death. He was a minor figure in Greek mythology, often referred to but rarely appearing in person.
His name is transliterated in Latin as Thanatus, but his equivalent in Roman mythology is Mors or Letus/Letum, and he is sometimes identified erroneously with Orcus (Orcus himself had a Greek equivalent in the form of Horkos, God of the Oath).

The name is very closely related to original names for "death" personified, I used to read Piers Anthony books and his first book in the "Incarnations of Immortality" is called "On A Pale Horse" and is about a guy who takes on the job of death, many references to the old greek name for death abound in the book, it is an older reference which is why some people not familiar with old languages might not make the connection right away, but seeing as how he makes a direct reference to "court death" it makes sense that the bad guys name would be a slight derivation on the old greek tittle for "death" or the "grim reaper"

I have not seen any references to this word so maybe this will help.

  16. It's actually Dr. Stein (Captain America) He actually is transported into space after having touched the cube. He is red and has the same smile and eyes...

    ReplyDelete
  17. When I saw it in theaters I swore it was Red Skull, but now you have me second guessing.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmm, I guess it's possible... Red Skull lifted the cube into the air during his battle with Captain America on the bomber in that movie. A portal opened above him, showing starry space and he glowed brightly and was seemingly disintegrated, swept up into the cosmos. So I guess there's a chance. I do think the purple face and furrowed chin is more likely to be Thanos though.

      Delete
    2. I thought it was red skull too! I think he is purple because the light around them is BLUE. you can see the blue on the stairs :D but he does have a the dips and what not in his face. maybe its an old red skull? since he wasnt stuck in the ice like the captain. but its nonsense. its gotta be Thanos :)

  38. The reference to "Courting Death" and the defined reaction of the villian give an almost certain assumption that it is Thanos. In the comics, Thanos was love-obsessed with Death herself; so this definietly leads this Geek to agree with the Thanos crowd.

Look it up: Thanos and Death, combine that with the screen shot and the quote and you too will agree.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Its Thanos. This geek was the only one in the theater who was able to instantly ID him. everyone walked by after i shouted in the theater to ask me who it was. some even started to looking it up on there phones after i told them who it was.

THIS IS GOING TO BE AWESOME. Thanos is powerful enough to beat all of the Avengers, but obviously won't. Definitely agree that Thor 2 would need to come out to develop his story slightly more. I for one am extremely happy with the way Marvel Studios is heading with the series. Just sucks it takes so long inbetween movies to for us to enjoy.

Click that cartoon picture for the full story (it's a long one). Clearly, his obsession with Death above all else means when his servant said 'to do battle with them would mean death' (or something like that) he smiled. The face at the end loves death. There is no other villian in Marvel comics as obsessed with it. Thanos is it. Can't wait for Avengers 2.

  93. lol god i wish people would stop suggesting red skull.. red skull is called red skull because his face is a SKULL red hulk would be awesome but i know my comics and i know the use of symbolism in movies the line "courting death" and his name being thanos is not a coincidence its meant to be there to announce the character without directly identifying him see all links posted in thread direct prroof names dropped is pretty good hint :P thank you that is all

  94. definitely Thanos. If you go to the Marvel website, and look up Thanos ( http://marvel.com/universe/Thanos ) skip to the second paragraph and it makes mention of the Cosmic Cube and the Avengers.

    2. look it is thanos for sure any marvel expert has to know that if you watch super hero squad season 2 it should tell you some more info plus since he is returning maybe so does silver surfer cause at the end of fantastic 4 2 he just floughts off in space so he must still be alive resting waiting for the right time to come back

  97. I like that people are up in arms because DC villains have been suggested. You need to grow up. However improbable, a crossover is not impossible. Look at the DC vs. Marvel comic series, or the two Superman and Spiderman series, or the JLA/Avengers series, or the Superman/Fantastic Four series. Simply because a movie crossover probably won't happen doesn't mean it couldn't. So please get off your pretentious horses. Their suggestions were no less legitimate.

  98. I swear I freaking yelled out Super Skrull like an idiot in the theater! But then I was like nooo, it cant be Super skrulls, Super Skrulls green this guys redish purple. Its Thanos for sure no doubt about it he fits the desription. But IK for sure from doing research that it was Super Skrull that talked and then Thanos turned around and smiled, the dim light made it hard to see, that would make the 2nd avengers even crazier! Super Skrull has shown up a lot more then Thanos in the Avenger comics to, so that would make sense! I watched the video over and over, its two different people talking because they have different armor, and the only person i can think of that would go great with Thanos is Super Skrulls. Thats just my opinion from reading comics and watching the movie...

    1. I feel ya bro.But its just that these movies are so damn good.Everyone now loves superheroes. For good reason, guys like us were captivated at a young age.The stories, the characters, the art. There's something to be said about creating a universe thats been going strong since the forties. And with all the mainstream interest these days. Our comicbook geek status has been turned up to eleven. So to all the non geeks. There isnt the slightest doubt of who it is.It is Thanos.Seriously, any Marvel fan knew who it was immediately.

  103. Steve! Ummm it's definitely thanos and I know this because....

I know this is avengers but he was in a season in super hero squad.. So maybe silver surfer will be there also he wears a helmet and has purple skin!! The person talking might be super skrull and that makes sense maybe be will bring his army because that happens a lot! Fantastic 4 might be there too but not as avenger as help or back up idk but it fits ....

  105. THE BAD GUY IN THE AVENGERS 2 IS THANOS. THE CHARACTER'S NAME IS A DERIVATION OF THANATOS, THE PERSONIFICATION OF DEATH AND MORTALITY IN GREEK MYTHOLOGY. LISTEN CAREFULLY TO WHAT THE GUY IS SAYING HE MENTIONS HUMANS<>DEATH ETC. THEN THEY SHOWED YOU A QUICK FLASH OF THE BAD GUY. WHEN I FIRST SAW THIS COMPARISON I BELIEVE IT IN AN INSTANT. YOU HIT THE NAIL RIGHT ON HIS HEAD. WHAT REALLY SUCKS IS THAT THE AVENGERS 2 IS GONNA BE RELEASE IN THE YEAR 2015 WE ALL CAN BE DEAD WELL MOST OF US JUST MIGHT BE.... >:D

  106. Ok, I have to admit that some of you have great points. But come on.. It was a sneak peak, you think they would have gotten something wrong, like EYE COLOR!? In the end credit when the thing turns around, his eyes are.. what color? Blue. Whos eye color has always been blue? APOCALYPSE! Kang's eyes are Brown, Thanos's are Red. Sorry, I just dont think they would have gotten something that took up half the screen wrong. Also his skin is kind of the right color, but the lighting doesnt give to much of that away. I actually think the Apocalypse run would be awesome. I'd love to see X-Men and Avengers team up next, and hell yeah the 4 Horsemen would be bad ass to see.
